  • Other smaller recipients (less than 180 railcars per recipient):
    – Railcars – 7,281;

    – Tons – 465,683 tonnes.

As we previously predicted, the volume of transportation towards the seaports of the North-Western region (NWR) in 2024 increased and continues to increase, and by the end of the year, according to our forecasts, it will amount to approximately 8 million tonnes, which is about 1.5 million tonnes more than in 2023.

We also note that the export volume of potash fertilizers to the terminal of JSC Baltic Ship Mechanical Plant (BSMZ) completely ceased in 2024. Under old contracts, only 75 railcars with a total weight of 4,783 tonnes were shipped in January 2024.

Additionally, it should be noted that the transportation of fertilizers to the ports of St. Petersburg significantly increases railcar turnover, as well as the delivery times of fertilizers to end recipients. And even despite the tariff preferences provided by the Russian Federation, they continue to be much less profitable than delivery through the ports of the Baltic countries.

The increase in fertilizer supply volumes is associated with the increased cost of transportation due to longer routes and dumping prices for fertilizers. Thus, the very fact of increased fertilizer supply volumes has not actually increased the amount of foreign currency earnings (in simple terms, more fertilizers were sold, but the same amount of foreign currency was received as for a smaller quantity in previous years).

Due to the shortage of railcars (mineral hoppers) for transporting potash fertilizers, JSC Belaruskali has significantly containerized its shipments to Russian seaports since 2023, and currently 70% of potash fertilizer exports are carried out in 20-foot BULK containers.

Reference Information on BULK Containers

Purpose and Application

BULK containers are designed for transporting bulk cargo, both packaged and unpackaged. They are ideal for transporting grain, fertilizers, malt, cement, sand, chemicals, and spices. These containers can also be used for general cargo transportation.

Transportation is carried out by road, railway, and sea. BULK containers do not require additional packaging, are equipped with special openings for bulk loading and unloading, have high airtightness, and a robust metal roof, floor, and walls.

Container Design

A standard 20-foot BULK container consists of a welded frame with corrugated metal cladding and a plywood wooden floor. The front end wall has a hatch for unloading, and the rear has a double-leaf door that can be sealed. Some models use a solid steel panel instead of a door. Loading can be done through hatches on the roof or by bulk method with a removable roof.

Loading and Unloading Hatches

Round or oval loading hatches are located on the container roof, evenly distributed for convenient loading. Rectangular unloading hatches are at the bottom of the end doors, which speeds up unloading due to natural gravity discharge and manual labor. Some models are equipped with a pneumatic device that supplies compressed air for quick unloading without manual labor. Special deflector gussets minimize cargo residue after unloading.

For airtightness, hatches and doors are equipped with rubber seals, ensuring a tight fit and silent closing. Reliable insulation protects the cargo from moisture and dust, and the robust design allows the container to be used in temperature ranges from -50 to +70 °C, making it suitable for both domestic and international use.

Lock Quality and Ease of Operation

Manufacturers pay special attention to the quality of locking mechanisms for end doors and hatches to ensure cargo safety. BULK containers can be equipped with ventilation and pneumatic devices to simplify loading and unloading. The design includes openings for forklifts and ladders in blocks over one meter high. 20-foot container modules belong to the DC (dry container) class, suitable for transporting packaged goods.

Key Dimensions and Characteristics

Dimensions of a typical 20-foot BULK container for bulk cargo:

  • External dimensions: 6058 x 2438 x 2591 mm
  • Internal dimensions: 5934 x 2258 x 2340 mm
  • Volume: 33 cubic meters
  • Door opening: 2335 x 2292 mm
  • Permissible cargo parameters: tare weight — 2450 kg, gross — 24,000 kg, payload capacity — 21,550 kg.

Popularity and Advantages

BULK containers are in demand due to the following advantages:

  • Ability to transship export cargo even without own terminals.
  • Additional capacity at universal terminals.
  • Increased requirements for bulk cargo delivery.
  • Popularity of mobile technologies for cost optimization.

Special container models allow for faster loading and unloading operations and safe delivery of raw materials to their destination. Their maintenance does not differ from other container models and includes:

  • Regular inspection for body and geometry damage.
  • Repair or replacement of worn parts.
  • Checking the serviceability of locking mechanisms.
  • Washing using special equipment.

1.1.2. Export of potash fertilizers dispatched by JSC Belaruskali to China via Russian border stations

* The data below concerns export shipments of potash fertilizers to China carried out only through Russian territory. The main part of exports from Belarus to China passes through Kazakhstan, but some insignificant volumes are also transported through Russian border stations: Naushki (exp. to KZD, transit via Mongolia), Grodekovo (exp. to KZD), and Zabaikalsk (exp. to KZD).

For 9 months of 2024, the number of large-capacity containers with potassium chloride dispatched by JSC Belaruskali along routes to Naushki stations (exp. to KZD, transit via Mongolia), Grodekovo (exp. to KZD), and Zabaikalsk (exp. to KZD), and further to China, amounted to 6,002 containers, and the total weight of the dispatched cargo was 180,060 tonnes.

Distribution of volumes by Chinese recipient companies:

  • Shandong Xintuo Import and Export Co., Ltd. — 2,414 containers, 72,420 tonnes.
  • Liaoning Migao Chemical Co.,Ltd. — 2,412 containers, 72,360 tonnes.
  • China National Agricultural Means Of Production Group Corporation — 558 containers, 16,740 tonnes.
  • Yongfer Agricultural Technology Co., Ltd. — 186 containers, 5,580 tonnes.
  • HUAKEN International Trade Co., Ltd. — 184 containers, 5,520 tonnes.

Distribution by stations for cargo transfer to the neighboring railway administration (to KZD):

  • Naushki (exp. to KZD, transit via Mongolia), East Siberian Railway — 2,724 containers, 81,720 tonnes.
  • Grodekovo (exp. to KZD), Far Eastern Railway — 1,670 containers, 50,100 tonnes.
  • Zabaikalsk (exp. to KZD), Trans-Baikal Railway — 1,608 containers, 48,240 tonnes.

For reference: The indicated routes through Russia have limited capacity for increasing potash fertilizer transportation volumes due to technical restrictions at Russian stations Grodekovo (exp. to KZD) and Zabaikalsk (exp. to KZD). These stations are primarily oriented towards the export of Russian products — coal, oil, grain, and other bulk cargo to China. Consequently, increasing supply volumes through these stations at the expense of Belarusian exports is currently practically impossible.

Vehicles are secured with wooden blocks fixed to the floor and elastic tie-downs. The full container loading cycle takes no more than an hour. When loading, JLLC “BelGee” engages several teams with a clear division of responsibilities: preparation of fasteners, loading, and securing.

The indicated volume of container traffic may not be the plant's products (cars), but its loading capacities were used for dispatching other products (e.g., timber or lumber).
